A key feature of Elmar’s in the Valley is a giant glass kettle, used to enhance the flavours and purity of the beers. The container is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere and is testimony to Elmar’s passion to produce a perfect brew. Elmar’s beers are brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law formed in 1516, which states the only ingredients used for the brewing of beer must be barley, hops and water. Elmar uses only the freshest ingredients imported directly from Germany. His beer is not filtered and retains all of the natural proteins, yeast and the whole vitamin B group. All of Elmar’s beers are free from preservatives and chemicals.
On tap selections at Elmar’s include:
Beer of the Month - Schwarzbier
Translating to “Black Beer”, Schwarzbier is a very traditional brew in Germany. Schwarzbier originated in southeastern Germany and is arguably one of the oldest European beer styles, brewed since the Middle Ages, with the first documented mention in 1390.
Gleaming ruby red in colour, with hints of chocolate and coffee on the back of the palate and a pleasant hop aroma on finish, Schwarzbier is a German dark lager style beer. Unlike British Stouts or Porters, Schwarzbier is milder and much less bitter, with a smooth, clean taste.
Brewed in strict accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516, Elmar’s Schwarzbier is brewed using dark malts, which get their dark colouring during the roasting process. Described as having a smooth, malty, coffee flavour by Elmar’s in the Valley’s Brewer, Brad Harris, Schwarzbier is best served in a tall glass to accentuate the dark elegance and appealing, creamy head of the beer. Schwarzbier will be released at Elmar’s in the Valley this month, and is available for a limited time only!
